Born and raised on his family's farm in Guatemala, Alex Espinoza grew up in a multi-generational household where food was woven into daily life. As the youngest of four children, he spent much of his time with his mother, learning the rhythms of open-fire cooking, overnight stews, and fresh cheese-making. Though he didn't initially envision a career in the kitchen—considering instead the police or military—his hard work and curiosity would set him on an entirely different path.

At 15, Espinoza moved to Santa Barbara to live with his uncle and attend school, and began working in restaurants as a busser. A move to Napa Valley led him to Tra Vigne, where he applied for a front-of-house job but was instead offered a position in the kitchen by Chef Michael Reardon. It was a pivotal moment. Over the next decade, Espinoza became a steady presence in Tra Vigne's kitchen, earning respect for his skill, dedication, and leadership. Working closely with chefs Eric Torrealba, Francesco Torre and Nash Cognetti, he balanced full-time work with courses at the Culinary Institute of America, Italian language studies, and management training through Real Restaurant Group. By his early twenties, he was entrusted with running day-to-day operations and helping preserve the restaurant's stellar reputation.

Espinoza went on to refine his craft at The Grill and The Restaurant at Meadowood and later served as Executive Chef at Peju Winery, where he embraced Napa's farm-to-table ethos and cooked for culinary icons like Jacques Pépin and Masaharu Morimoto. His talent also led to television appearances and brand ambassador roles, expanding his reach beyond wine country.

In 2021, Espinoza joined Bottega full-time, reuniting with longtime Tra Vigne colleague Kellie Magna. He worked closely with Chef Michael Chiarello, rebuilding the team in the wake of the pandemic and developing dishes that blended tradition with innovation. When Chiarello passed away, Espinoza became the first Executive Chef of Bottega other than its founder—a role he holds with deep respect and pride.

Today, he leads the kitchen with the same fire Chiarello inspired, bringing back guest-favorite signature dishes and adding his own, such as lamb ragù cannelloni and a carbonara that remains one of Bottega's best sellers. Espinoza credits Chiarello with pushing him to think bigger: "Do it now, not tomorrow. Make it happen." That philosophy defines his approach—not only to cooking but to cultivating a team where every voice matters.

At Bottega, Espinoza continues to evolve the menu while honoring its Italian-Californian roots, ensuring it remains one of Napa Valley's most beloved destinations for locals and visitors alike.
